nothing:  tired of tomorrow review

if you dig too deep into the history of philadelphia shoegazers nothing, you'll start to find yourself going down a rabbit hole of drama and crazy violence.  the first time I ever heard of them was hearing about some kind of fight they had gotten into with that band slowdive.  then i heard that the singer dominic had gone to jail for stabbing someone.  then i heard that they were notorious in their earlier days for going crazy at shows.  and this was before i had heard even one note of their music.

so how do you come to the table with this baggage and make any kind of decision about if you like their new album or not?

you just push play.  from the moment that the band plugs in and "fever Queen" takes hold, they get you and don't let go.  stylistically, there are a lot of songs in the wall of sound, mid tempo shoegaze mold.  "nineteen ninety heaven" is a hot number, with an intro that really brought me into "dreams burn down" era ride.  there are a couple more upbeat numbers at the beginning of the record - "vertigo flowers" is super noisy but fast, and "acd (abcessive compulsive disorder)" is straight jamming.

holy moley though with these lyrics though.  on the above mentioned "acd," dominic asks for a cure for his disorder while simultaneously telling the subject that he would eventually hurt them.  on "vertigo flowers" he warns us to "watch out for those who want to be anything at all."  man that's bleak.  but the overall effect, like the best hardcore or punk records, leave me with a feeling that at least there's someone that can express what we all feel in our darkest moments, and that's a very comforting feeling.

i would definitely recommend this record to anyone who likes shoegaze in the louder vein.  this is right up my alley so i'm going to have this thing nailed to the turntable for a while.
